Svetlana Ashimkhanovna Ashimkhanova is a literary scholar, Doctor of Philology, and professor. She was born on May 27, 1943, in the village of Dzhalanash, Raiymbek district, Almaty region. From 1962 to 1967, she studied at the Romano-German language of the S.M. Kirov Kazakh State University. In 1969-1973, she studied at the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University and defended her candidate's dissertation "National and International in Kazakh Literature" (the problem of genres). Since 1973, she worked as a senior lecturer at the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature, Faculty of Philology, KazMU, and in 1982 she became an associate professor of the department. In 1995, she was appointed to the position of head of the Department of Philology, Institute for Advanced Studies, KazMU on a competitive basis. In 1996-1998 she worked as a senior research fellow. In 1999 she defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic "Poetic Prose of G.M. Musrepov". In 2001-2005 she held the position of head of the department of Russian and foreign literature. From September 2005 to the present she is a professor of the department of theory and methodology of translation. Areas of research: Western European literature, conceptual and terminological apparatus of literary criticism, comparative literary criticism, theory of literary genres, translation: theory and practice, Kazakh classics and its interpretation. Main works: 1) the textbook "History of Western European Literature of the 20th Century"; 2) the textbook "American Short Stories" in English for the specialty of Foreign Philology. 3) "Historical Literature" in English. The textbook "English Literature from Romanticism to the Present Day". In 2002, she was awarded the Sh.Valikhanov Prize. State award to scientists who contributed to the development of science in 2004-2006. In 2006-2008, she received a state scholarship awarded to scientists who contributed to the development of science. In 2005-2006, "Western Europe in the 20th Century", considered the first textbook for a Kazakhstani university. won a grant in an open competition of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the book "History of Literature". In 2008-2009, she received the title of "Best University Teacher" of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
